How to choose a towel rack
Three questions are enough: how many towels to hang, how much free wall space do you have, and can you drill. The third one alone eliminates half of the models for rentals.

Wall clearance
The clearance from the wall is the detail that decides whether your towels dry or get moldy. A bar pressed flat against the partition traps moisture between the fabric and the wall. Just five centimeters are enough to create the airflow that makes all the difference.

the ring and the bar do not perform the same function. A ring is meant for a hand towel, never a bath towel : textiles pile up there instead of spreading out, and they don't dry well. Plan for a ring near the sink and a bar near the shower, not the other way around.
To pierce or not to pierce
Three drill-free solutions exist, and they are not all created equal. This is the number one concern for rentals and on tiles you don't want to damage.

Suction cup with lever : sticks to a perfectly smooth and non-porous surface, such as glossy tiles or glass. It will not stick to matte paint, plaster, or painted drywall.

Mounting adhesive : more tolerance on the holder, but capacity limited to a lightweight towel. The weight of a wet terry towel causes it to fall off.

The test before buying a suction cup
Run your hand over the surface. If it catches, even slightly, the suction cup will not hold over time. A glossy glazed tile, glass, or a laminate panel is suitable. A matte tile, textured earthenware, or satin paint is not. When in doubt, use a ladder.
Materials and moisture resistance
A towel rail is constantly exposed to water through capillary action, via the wet fabric resting on it. The material determines its lifespan more than its shape.

Solid brass : the most durable, does not rust, available in chrome, satin gold, and matte black. The weight betrays the quality.

An ordinary chrome-plated steel towel rail eventually starts to pit at the weld points, where the chrome layer is thinnest. This is the first sign of aging, and it usually appears in the second year.

Choose the location : within arm's reach of the shower or bathtub, without obstructing the opening of a door.

Trace the height at 120 or 130 cm from the finished floor, then mark the center-to-center distance of the two plates using a level.

Drill with a ceramic drill bit in rotation-only mode on tiles, using masking tape to prevent slipping.

Anchor according to the surface : metal expansion anchor in solid material, wall plug for hollow material in breeze block, toggle bolt in drywall.

Secure the plates, check that it is level, then clip or screw the bar into place.
On drywall, a rail loaded with two wet towels exerts a pulling force of several kilograms. The plastic wall anchors provided in the box are almost never sufficient; replace them.
Optimize space with a towel rack
In a small bathroom, the towel rail is often the last element to be placed, on whichever wall is left. This is a mistake: it affects daily comfort just as much as the vanity unit.
