How to choose a bathroom faucet
Four criteria matter, in this order: the installation type dictated by the sink setup, spout height in relation to the bowl, flow rate, and finish. Style comes after those decisions. A faucet that does not fit the sink properly will never feel right, no matter how good it looks.
Installation type is the only non-negotiable criterion because it depends on the number of holes already available. A single-hole countertop will not accept a three-hole faucet without additional drilling, which is impossible on ceramic and risky on marble.
Standard single-hole drilling diameter: 35 mm.
Three-hole center spacing: 200 mm between handle centers.
Maximum countertop thickness: up to 40 mm with the supplied threaded rod.
Wall-mounted faucet height: 25 to 30 cm above the countertop.
Flow rate is one of the most overlooked criteria. An unrestricted faucet can use 12 to 15 liters per minute, while a flow-limiting aerator can bring that down to around 5 liters without reducing comfort for hand washing.
The main bathroom faucet configurations
| Mounting type | Drilling | Best suited to |
| Concealed | No countertop hole | The body disappears into the wall and only the trim remains visible |
| Deck-mounted | 1 x 35 mm hole | The spout sits on the countertop beside the sink |
| High-spout | 1 x 35 mm hole | Required for many vessel sinks |
| Wall-mounted | No countertop hole | Clear countertop, with concealed water supplies |
| Single-hole single-lever | 1 x 35 mm hole | One lever controls flow and temperature |
| Three-hole | 3 holes, 200 mm centers | Separate handles and a more classic composition |
| Ceiling-mounted | No countertop hole | Statement installation above a freestanding sink, planned during construction |
Concealed installation dominates our range because it keeps the countertop clear and removes many areas where limescale and soap collect. Its trade-off is construction work: the body must be installed inside the wall before tiling, with an access panel for the cartridge. Deck-mounted and high-spout faucets remain the easiest renovation options. Wall-mounted models offer a cleaner counter without going as far as a ceiling-mounted installation.
Our bathroom faucet selection
The collection includes 19 active references from €130 to €435 across the configurations above. The solid-brass MÉRIDIEN collection, inspired by watchmaking, covers six configurations and five finishes: chrome, brushed copper, gunmetal, brushed gold, and black.
| Installation type | Price | Examples |
| High-spout | €130 to €285 | MALACHITE, TIMO, MÉRIDIEN high-spout and side-control versions |
| Deck-mounted | €149 to €330 | GRANATO, PINO, BETULLA |
| Single-hole single-lever | €170 to €290 | CORNIOLA, MÉRIDIEN side-control, BERILLIO knurled |
| Concealed | €205 to €230 | PLATANO, CULLINAN |
| Two-hole | €325 to €355 | MÉRIDIEN, including wall-mounted and curved-spout versions |
| Three-hole | €375 to €435 | MÉRIDIEN, including wall-mounted and curved-spout versions |
For a studio or tighter budget, a single-hole faucet is generally the simplest to install. For a design-led double vanity, a two- or three-hole wall-mounted MÉRIDIEN configuration clears the countertop and creates a more architectural result.
Which faucet height for which sink?
| Sink type | Spout height | Note |
| Recessed sink | 10 to 15 cm | Standard faucet, bowl sits at countertop level |
| Semi-recessed sink | 15 to 22 cm | Measure the actual sink projection |
| Low vessel sink | 22 to 28 cm | High-spout faucet required |
| Tall vessel sink | 28 to 35 cm | Extra-high, wall-mounted, or ceiling-mounted faucet |
Aim for 8 to 12 cm between the spout outlet and the bottom of the bowl, with the water landing over or slightly forward of the drain. A spout that is too short sends water against the back wall and creates splashing. For a vessel sink, always verify this dimension before ordering.
Materials, finishes, and long-term durability
A quality faucet body is made from solid brass. Lightweight zamak or chrome-plated plastic bodies generally age less well in a humid environment. Internally, the key wear component is usually a 35 mm ceramic cartridge.
- Polished chrome: easy to clean and timeless, but shows water spots and fingerprints.
- Matte black: highly popular and visually clean, but avoid acidic cleaners.
- Brushed brass and gold: warm finishes that disguise light mineral marks well, but do not use aggressive descalers.
- Brushed stainless steel, brushed copper, and gunmetal: durable finishes offered within the MÉRIDIEN collection.
A note on matte black finishes
The durability of black or gold finishes depends heavily on the coating process. A high-quality deposited finish can last significantly longer than a basic painted coating. If the product page does not specify the process, ask before purchasing.
Installing a bathroom faucet
- Turn off the water at the shutoff valves and open the old faucet to release pressure.
- Attach the supply hoses before installing the body, hand-tight, then finish carefully with a wrench.
- Feed the hoses and threaded rod through the hole with the sealing gasket between the faucet and countertop.
- Tighten from below using the mounting plate, without over-tightening ceramic.
- Connect the supply hoses, hot on the left and cold on the right, without twisting them.
- Turn the water back on slowly and watch every connection for at least two minutes.
The mistake behind many leaks
A twisted or sharply bent flexible hose. Stainless-steel braiding can fatigue at the bend and fail later. If the supplied hose is too short to reach the shutoff valve without strain, replace it with a longer one.
Wall-mounted installation follows a different sequence: the concealed body goes into the wall before tiling and the trim plate is installed last. Plan an access panel because the cartridge remains a serviceable wear part. The same principle applies to a concealed shower faucet.
Care and budget
Regular maintenance extends the life of any faucet. Limescale is the main enemy of both flow rate and finish.
- Aerator descaling: soak the aerator in white vinegar every couple of months to restore normal flow.
- Dry after use: wiping the spout and base reduces water marks, especially on matte black and gold finishes.
- Cartridge: if the lever stiffens or the faucet starts dripping, replacing the cartridge can restore normal operation without replacing the entire faucet.
For an economical first purchase, a chrome single-hole faucet is usually the simplest option. A full renovation may justify a concealed or wall-mounted model because it keeps the countertop clear. A higher-end project can move toward the MÉRIDIEN collection for a coordinated bathroom, bathtub, and shower language.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a bathroom faucet?
Start with the number of holes already available. Then measure the sink height and choose a spout that leaves roughly 8 to 12 cm between the outlet and the bottom of the bowl. Flow rate and finish come after that.
What types of bathroom faucets are available?
Concealed, deck-mounted, high-spout, wall-mounted, single-hole single-lever, two- or three-hole, and ceiling-mounted configurations. The choice depends first on the available drilling and plumbing layout.
How much does a bathroom faucet cost?
In our range, prices run from €130 for an entry high-spout model to €435 for a three-hole wall-mounted MÉRIDIEN configuration in solid brass.
How do you install a bathroom faucet?
Turn off the water, attach the hoses to the faucet body first, pass everything through the mounting hole with its gasket, secure from below, then connect to the shutoff valves without twisting the hoses.
What is the difference between a single-lever faucet and a two-handle mixer?
A single-lever faucet controls flow and temperature with one lever through a ceramic cartridge. A two-handle mixer uses separate hot and cold controls.
What makes a quality bathroom faucet?
A solid-brass body, ceramic cartridge, flow-limiting aerator, and stainless-steel braided supply hoses are useful quality indicators.
Can a bathroom faucet be mounted from the ceiling?
Yes, in a new build or major renovation. The water supply drops from the ceiling to a suspended spout above the sink, so the provision has to be planned before the ceiling is closed.
Is a wall-mounted faucet harder to install?
It is more restrictive rather than inherently more difficult. The concealed body must be installed while the wall is open and an access panel should be planned for future maintenance.
