Your showerhead touches your skin every day, more than almost any other product in the bathroom. Our selection starts from that idea: a useful showerhead should act on water quality, not only on the shape of the spray. Discover our filtered hand shower and replacement cartridge, followed by the key points for choosing, installing, and maintaining a showerhead.
| Product | What it does | Price |
|---|---|---|
| AQUANE filtered showerhead | Activated-carbon cartridge housed in the handle, open-ring head, available in white, gray, and black, 1 filter included | €95 |
| AQUANE replacement filter | Composite activated carbon and stainless-steel mesh, tool-free replacement, available individually or in a pack of 3 | €38.95 to €88.95 depending on quantity |
A filter inside the handle. AQUANE retains chlorine, fluoride, and the minerals responsible for limescale before the water reaches your skin and hair. The cartridge can be removed from the handle independently, so when it wears out you replace the filter rather than the entire showerhead. This design makes the purchase more durable and reduces waste.
A design that stands apart. Its open-ring head breaks away from the usual round showerhead. It pairs just as naturally with chrome fixtures as with black fixtures, in a modern shower room or a family bathroom.
Four criteria matter, in this order. The first two determine everyday comfort, while the next two are mainly about preference and style.
| Criterion | What it changes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Flow rate | Spray strength and water consumption | 6 to 9 L/min for water-saving use, 10 to 15 L/min for comfort |
| Nozzle type | Maintenance in hard water | Flexible nozzles or metal jets |
| Diameter | Width of the spray area | 8 to 12 cm for a hand shower, 20 to 30 cm for an overhead showerhead |
| Number of spray modes | How much you can vary the shower feel | 1 to 6 modes depending on the model |
Flow rate matters more than the number of spray modes. A six-mode showerhead limited to 6 liters per minute can deliver six mediocre sprays. A properly sized single-spray showerhead can deliver a genuinely satisfying shower.
Add a fifth criterion if your water bothers you, such as tight-feeling skin, dull hair, or a chlorine smell. In that case, filtration matters more than the number of spray modes, and a filtered showerhead becomes the priority.
There are three main families, and many installations benefit from combining two of them. A fourth type, the filtered hand shower, adds a filtration function rather than replacing the other categories.
Terms such as showerhead, hand shower, and shower handset are often used for the same accessory: the head that distributes water at the end of the shower hose.
A shower column combines an overhead showerhead and a hand shower with a diverter. This configuration offers the most comfort and can connect to existing plumbing when the standard 150 mm center spacing is respected. Our shower columns combine both functions in thermostatic and mechanical versions.
| Spray | Feel | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Rain | Wide and soft, fine droplets | Relaxation, evening shower |
| Massage | Concentrated and pulsing | Neck and shoulders after exercise |
| Waterfall | Dense sheet of water | Quick rinsing for long hair |
| Water-saving | Aerated through an aerator | Daily use, lower water consumption |
| Mixed | Two sprays combined | Versatility |
The massage setting can feel impressive at first, but it is rarely the mode used every day. Pay the most attention to the spray you will actually use morning and evening because that is what defines day-to-day comfort.
This remains one of the most misunderstood product categories on the market, and one where marketing claims can be especially vague.
A showerhead does not create pressure. It delivers the pressure already available. Pressure comes from the plumbing system and is measured in bar, typically around 1 to 3 bar in a home. A so-called high-pressure showerhead uses smaller openings to accelerate the water at the same flow rate, creating a more forceful spray without necessarily using more water.
| Water pressure | How it feels in the shower | Recommended showerhead |
|---|---|---|
| Below 1 bar | Weak stream, soft spray | Narrow nozzles, avoid large diameters |
| 1 to 2 bar | Acceptable with a hand shower, weak with a large overhead head | High-pressure or adjustable multi-spray model |
| 2 to 3 bar | Comfortable with most formats | All sizes, including large diameters |
| Above 3 bar | Strong spray, possible splashing | Aerator or flow regulator |
How to measure your flow rate in two minutes
Place a graduated bucket under the showerhead, open the water fully, and time fifteen seconds. Multiply the collected volume by four to get liters per minute. Below 8 liters, your system has limited flow and a large showerhead may disappoint regardless of price. Above 12 liters, most formats will work well.
A large overhead showerhead needs sufficient flow. A 30 cm head spreads the same amount of water over roughly three times the surface area of a 10 cm hand shower. On a weak system, the water can fall in soft droplets instead of creating a strong rainfall effect.
The showerhead directly affects water consumption. Every liter of hot water also required energy from an electric or gas water heater. Reducing the flow rate therefore reduces both water use and the energy used to heat it.
Water-saving showerheads can reduce flow to around 6 or 7 liters per minute by using an aerator that mixes air into the stream. The spray still feels full because the apparent volume is maintained, while consumption can be roughly half that of a conventional 15-liter-per-minute showerhead.
A simple calculation helps illustrate the difference: a five-minute shower at 12 liters per minute uses 60 liters, compared with 35 liters at 7 liters per minute. Over a year of daily showers, the difference can materially affect consumption without necessarily reducing comfort.
In hard water, limescale builds up on the nozzles and gradually blocks the openings. The spray becomes uneven, starts shooting sideways, and some nozzles eventually stop flowing altogether. Limescale also leaves white marks on shower glass and fixtures.
Silicone nozzles vs. metal jets
A showerhead with flexible silicone nozzles can often be descaled by rubbing the nozzles with a thumb for about thirty seconds, without dismantling or chemicals. Metal jets usually require a full soak in white vinegar for several hours, several times a year. In water above 25 French degrees of hardness, the difference in maintenance over ten years becomes significant.
Anti-limescale showerheads use a filtration cartridge that does not remove limescale entirely, but changes how it crystallizes so it adheres less to surfaces. The effect is visible on the nozzles and shower glass, not throughout the entire plumbing system or water heater. Our guide to anti-limescale showerheads explains what to expect.
You can check your local water hardness free of charge through your municipality or water supplier. Below 15 French degrees, the water is considered soft and limescale is much less of a concern. Above 25, hardness becomes a major purchase criterion.
On gold or matte black models, limit soaking to around one hour and rinse immediately. Vinegar is acidic and can dull some finishes after prolonged exposure. On a filtered showerhead, remove the cartridge before soaking. The full method is detailed in our guide to descaling a showerhead.
Replacing an old showerhead with a new one takes only a few minutes and usually requires no tools. The universal 1/2-inch connection makes it one of the simplest bathroom upgrades.
Thread: 1/2 inch, standard in France and across much of Europe.
Washer: supplied with the showerhead and best replaced whenever the connection is dismantled.
Tightening: by hand, never with pliers.
Hose length: 1.50 m for seated use, 1.75 to 2 m for standing use.
Holder height: 90 to 170 cm on a sliding rail.
All of our models fit an existing shower hose. Tightening with pliers can crush the washer and cause the very leak you were trying to prevent. For water-outlet and faucet heights, see our guide to shower faucet height.
The holder matters as much as the showerhead. A fixed holder creates one permanent height, which can be inconvenient in a household with users of different heights. A sliding shower rail typically offers a useful adjustment range from around 90 to 170 cm.
The shower hose is a wear item
A shower hose should be replaced every five to seven years, ideally before it starts leaking. Stainless-steel-covered hoses generally last longer than PVC sleeves, while anti-twist designs reduce the twisting that eventually damages the inner hose. This inexpensive part is often ignored until a leak appears.
Choose the finish to coordinate with the rest of the bathroom fixtures rather than the tile or vanity. Chrome with chrome, matte black with matte black. Our bathroom fixtures use these same finish families, and our bathtub faucets help keep the look consistent through the bathing area.
PVD finishing is a useful quality indicator for colors other than chrome. A matte black or gold finish created by vacuum deposition can last significantly longer than a simple painted finish, which may chip where water repeatedly runs. This information is not always shown on product pages even though two visually similar models can age very differently.
A hot shower fills the room with steam within minutes. Relative humidity rises, mirrors fog, and condensation eventually settles on grout and joints. Lower flow produces less steam and wastes less heat, but ventilation remains the main way to manage humidity. An electric towel warmer can also help dry towels and reduce lingering moisture.
Ventilate after every shower, wipe down the shower glass, and keep the water temperature reasonable. Our guide to bathroom humidity covers the habits that help protect the room.
A showerhead works as part of a system. A few accessories make a noticeable difference in everyday use:
To complete the shower area, explore our bathroom accessories.
The showerhead is the final component in a chain that includes the water supply, faucet, hose, and holder. Every part affects the final result, and even a good showerhead cannot compensate for a faucet with unstable temperature.
Bath and shower in the same room: children may use the bathtub while adults use the shower in the same bathroom. A hand shower on the bathtub can serve both purposes with one product to maintain. For sizing the bath itself, explore our bathtubs.
Coordinate the bathroom faucet with the shower fixtures as well: same tone, same finish family. A mismatched piece is immediately noticeable, while a coordinated room feels much more considered.
Regular care is the easiest way to keep the spray clean and extend the life of the product. Three simple habits are enough, with no aggressive chemicals required.
These simple habits can extend the useful life of the showerhead by years and reduce the need for replacement.
The price difference across this category generally reflects three levels of construction.
| Range | What you get | Typical real-world lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Entry level | Chrome-plated ABS, single spray, metal jets | 2 to 4 years |
| Mid-range | Stainless steel, flexible nozzles, multiple sprays | 8 to 12 years |
| Premium | Solid metal, PVD finish, integrated filtration | 15 years or more |
A cheap showerhead can cost more over time if it needs replacing twice while a well-designed model lasts ten years. AQUANE is €95 with one filter included, and replacement filters are ordered separately afterward. The real cost should therefore be viewed over several years, including filtration.
Each product page lists the price, available colors, and included components. If you have a question before ordering or are unsure whether the showerhead will fit your existing hose, our customer service team can help you choose. Consider ordering a replacement cartridge with the showerhead so you already have one when the time comes.

The best showerhead depends on your water and plumbing. Hard water: flexible nozzles and filtration. Low pressure: narrow nozzles and a modest diameter. Sensitive skin: an activated-carbon filtered showerhead.
6 to 9 liters per minute for water-saving use, 10 to 15 for comfort. An aerator adds air to maintain a fuller feel while reducing water use. You can measure your own flow rate with a bucket in fifteen seconds.
Choose an aerated model around 6 to 7 liters per minute, add a flow regulator if your system delivers too much water, and shorten the shower by one minute. Using less hot water also reduces energy consumption.
It does not create pressure. It uses smaller openings to accelerate the existing flow, making the spray feel stronger without necessarily using more water. It is most useful below about 2 bar.
Turn off the water, unscrew the old showerhead by hand, place the new washer in the connection, and screw the new head on until seated. The 1/2-inch thread used in France and much of Europe fits common shower hoses.
It does not remove all limescale. It changes how mineral deposits crystallize so they adhere less readily to the nozzles and shower glass. The effect is local to the showerhead rather than the entire plumbing system. It becomes more useful above about 25 French degrees of hardness.
Solid metal for longevity, stainless steel for corrosion resistance, and ABS plastic for budget-friendly construction. Flexible silicone nozzles make maintenance easier regardless of the body material.
The hand shower is the most versatile because it can be directed for rinsing, bathing a child, or cleaning the enclosure. An overhead showerhead provides a rainfall effect but wets the hair every time. A shower column combines both.
Replace it when the filtered flow starts to decrease. We do not state a fixed service life for the AQUANE filter because no confirmed duration is available. A pack of three replacements helps ensure you have a spare ready.
A useful review mentions the home's water hardness and water pressure. A low rating caused by weak spray can sometimes reflect the plumbing system rather than the product itself, so compare the reviewer's installation with your own.
The showerhead is chosen last, once flow rate and water-outlet height have been determined by the rest of the installation. To plan the project from the beginning, explore the complete bathroom collection.
