    Freestanding Bathtub

Freestanding bathtubs: the centerpiece of the bathroom

A freestanding bathtub does not sit against a wall. It stands freely in the bathroom, at the center of the room or in front of a window, and often becomes the first element you notice when you walk in. Unlike a built-in straight or corner tub, it is not concealed behind a surround. It becomes a design object in its own right, visible from every angle.

Choose a freestanding bathtub around four criteria, in this order: the space available around it, the material, the finish, and the faucet configuration. Shape and color define the look, but space and construction constraints determine whether the project is realistic.

Typical freestanding bathtub size: 170 x 75 cm. Aéraly models range from 60 to 78 cm high.

Clearance around the tub: minimum 40 cm.

Recommended room size: at least 8 m².

Stated capacity: 290 to 340 liters depending on the model.

    Our designer freestanding bathtubs

Our collection brings together five premium freestanding bathtubs in acrylic, engineered stone, or crystal resin. Every model is supplied with its drain and trap. Faucets are selected separately according to the bathroom layout.

    BathtubMaterial and shapeDimensionsCapacity and weightPrice

    LINEARectangular volume, vertical Rock Texture relief170 x 75 x 60 cm330 L, 75 kg€2,595
    VITRATranslucent crystal resin180 x 85 x 78 cmNot specified€3,495

ELYRA is the easiest model to integrate. Its oval silhouette works in both contemporary and more classic bathrooms, and at 60 kg it is the lightest option, which matters on an upper floor. KERA takes the opposite approach, with faceted walls and crisp angles that create a mineral, architectural presence. LIORA keeps the familiarity of an oval shape but adds fluting that catches the light. LINEA uses a rectangular volume softened by vertical grooves. VITRA is the signature piece: translucent crystal resin in Emerald Green or Ruby Red, at 180 x 85 x 78 cm, for generous bathrooms where access can be checked before delivery.

Oval, round, or rectangular freestanding bathtub

An oval bathtub remains the most versatile choice. Its curves soften the room and the sloped backrest provides comfortable support. A round freestanding bathtub is wider and shorter and can work well for shared bathing, but it needs an almost square footprint. A rectangular or angular bathtub brings sharper lines to a contemporary or minimalist bathroom.

Also check the drain position. A centered drain allows a double-ended bath. An offset drain determines the direction of use and often the faucet position. Confirm it on the product page before the work begins.

White, black, gray, or color: choosing the finish

ELYRA, KERA, LIORA, and LINEA are available in Mineral White, Black, Blue Gray, Cement Gray, Cappuccino, and Prussian Blue. The exterior finish can change how the entire room feels.

    • Mineral White: timeless, visually light, and easy to coordinate with chrome, black, or brass faucets.
    • Black: graphic and architectural, particularly strong against pale stone or tile, but best in a bright bathroom.
    • Blue Gray and Cement Gray: mineral shades that coordinate naturally with microcement, stone-effect tile, and light wood.
    • Cappuccino: a warmer earth tone for softer, natural interiors.
    • Prussian Blue: a deep statement color that works especially well with brass fixtures.

Glossy white reflects more light but shows mineral deposits more readily. Matte finishes feel more mineral and contemporary and tend to disguise water marks better. Choose the bathtub color after the wall and floor finishes, not before.

Acrylic, engineered stone, solid surface, or cast iron

    MaterialAdvantagesTrade-offs
AcrylicLightweight, warm to the touch, good heat retention, more accessible priceScratches more easily, although superficial marks can be polished
Engineered stone and solid surfaceMineral matte appearance, strong thermal inertia, precise and textured formsHeavier, more expensive, floor load capacity must be checked
Crystal resinTranslucent, unique sculptural effectBest suited to large rooms and requires non-abrasive care
Enameled cast ironExtremely durable, excellent heat retention, classic lookVery heavy, often more than 100 kg empty

Acrylic is well suited to upper floors and tighter budgets. Engineered stone and solid surface feel denser, retain heat well, and allow textures such as LIORA's fluting or KERA's facets. Cast iron suits a more traditional aesthetic but its weight complicates upper-floor installation.

The advantages of a freestanding bathtub

    • A design that structures the room: the bathtub becomes the focal point around which the vanity, mirror, and shower are arranged.
    • Freedom of placement: in the center, in front of a window, or wherever the room offers the best perspective.
    • A deeper, more immersive bath: our models are 60 cm high, with enveloping tubs designed for shoulder-deep bathing.
    • No surround or tiled apron: fewer joints to maintain and easier cleaning when there is enough clearance.
    • A more luxurious feel for residential bathrooms and hospitality projects alike.

The drawbacks of a freestanding bathtub, and how to plan around them

    • Space: allow room to walk around the tub. Tape out 170 x 75 cm on the floor plus 40 cm of clearance before ordering.
    • Plumbing: the drain and hot and cold supplies must reach the tub location. Plan them in the floor before tiling.
    • Cost: the bathtub, floor-mounted faucet, and floor work cost more than a built-in tub. A wall-mounted faucet can reduce the budget when the tub sits close to a partition.
    • Hot water: a large tub uses a substantial volume. Check that the water heater or boiler can keep up.
    • Weight: filled and occupied, a 170 cm freestanding bathtub can weigh 400 to 500 kg over little more than one square meter. On an upper floor, verify the floor structure, especially in older timber buildings.

How much space does a freestanding bathtub need?

Allow at least 40 cm of clearance around the tub, and more on the side used to enter it. In an 8 to 10 m² bathroom, a 170 x 75 cm model generally works best near a window or offset to one side. Above 10 m², the bathtub can sit centrally. In an open primary suite, it can also become part of the bedroom composition.

Freestanding bathtub in a small bathroom

Below 8 m², a true freestanding bathtub is rarely practical. A back-to-wall semi-freestanding bathtub or a compact straight tub usually makes better use of the room. If space is very limited, compare the option with a shower in our guide to replacing a bathtub with a shower. For common formats, see our bathtub dimensions guide.

    Where to place the bathtub

    1. In front of a window: natural light emphasizes the silhouette and turns the bath into a more relaxing experience.
    2. In the center of the room: the most dramatic placement, but also the one that requires the most space and floor plumbing.
    3. Parallel to a partition, 40 cm away or more: a practical compromise that can use a wall-mounted faucet and a feature wall behind the tub.

Align the bathtub with the architecture of the room, such as the window axis, vanity, or mirror. Explore our bathroom vanities when planning the full layout.

Which faucet for a freestanding bathtub?

TypeHow it worksWhen to choose it
Freestanding faucetFloor-mounted column beside the bathtubBathtub positioned away from the wall
Wall-mounted faucetSpout and controls mounted on a partitionBathtub positioned close to a wall
Concealed faucetBody hidden in the wall, with only spout and controls visibleFull renovation with an open partition

Floor-mounted faucets are the configuration most closely associated with freestanding bathtubs. Models such as GORGO and TORBERNITE sit beside the tub. Coordinate the finish with the bathroom faucet and accessories. Browse the full bathtub faucet collection.

    Installing a freestanding bathtub

    1. Check access: doors, hallways, stairs, and elevators before buying.
    2. Verify floor load capacity upstairs, especially for engineered-stone models.
    3. Position the drain beneath the bathtub with enough slope toward the waste stack.
    4. Bring hot and cold water supplies through the floor for a freestanding faucet, or through the wall for a wall-mounted faucet.
    5. Finish the floor, then position and level the bathtub.
    6. Connect the pop-up drain and trap, supplied with the bathtub.
    7. Test for leaks by filling and fully draining the tub before sealing around the base.

    Do not underestimate hot-water demand

Our freestanding bathtubs are listed at 290 to 340 liters. A comfortable bath does not use the full rim-to-rim volume, but it still requires far more hot water than a shower. Have your hot-water production checked before ordering.

    Care and maintenance

Clean with a soft sponge or cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner suitable for bathroom surfaces. Avoid abrasive powders, scouring pads, and highly acidic products, especially on matte finishes. On textured models such as LINEA, KERA, and LIORA, use a soft brush on the exterior relief. Drying the surface with a microfiber cloth helps reduce mineral marks, particularly on black or colored finishes.

Tips for enjoying a freestanding bathtub

    • Add a side table or stool for towels, a book, or bath accessories.
    • Use layered lighting, ideally dimmable, to make the bath feel more relaxing.
    • Keep the bathroom warm with an electric towel warmer.
    • Keep a separate shower for everyday use if space allows.
    • Preserve negative space around the tub, because that visual breathing room is part of the freestanding effect.
    • Coordinate accessories with the faucet finish for a cohesive room.

    Freestanding bathtub prices

At Aéraly, prices range from €2,395 for the acrylic ELYRA to €2,595 for LIORA and LINEA, with KERA at €2,495 and VITRA in crystal resin at €3,495. Add the faucet, roughly €390 to €625 for our freestanding bathtub faucets, plus installation work quoted by your contractor.

Bathroom inspiration with a freestanding bathtub

    • Mineral bathroom: KERA in Cement Gray, microcement, and matte black faucets.
    • Classic bathroom: a white oval tub, black-and-white checkerboard tile, and brass bathtub faucet.
    • Natural bathroom: LIORA in Cappuccino, pale wood, and plants in front of a large window.
    • Signature bathroom: VITRA in Emerald Green with dark walls and indirect lighting.
    • Color-led bathroom: a Prussian Blue bathtub with a round sink and gold-finish mirror.

To complete the room, a freestanding sink echoes the tub's standalone presence, while an LED bathroom mirror adds front-facing light above the sink.

    Frequently asked questions

Which freestanding bathtub should I choose?

Start with the available space: 170 x 75 cm plus 40 cm of clearance around it. Then choose the material according to the floor and budget, followed by the shape and finish.

What are the advantages of a freestanding bathtub?

It becomes a focal point, offers more freedom of placement, creates a deeper bathing experience, and removes the need for a tiled surround.

    What are the drawbacks?

It requires more floor space, plumbing must be planned carefully, the faucet and floor work can cost more, hot-water demand is higher, and total filled weight must be considered.

How much does a freestanding bathtub cost?

At Aéraly, from €2,395 for ELYRA to €3,495 for VITRA, with KERA at €2,495 and LIORA or LINEA at €2,595. Add the faucet and installation.

How do you install a freestanding bathtub?

Check access and floor capacity, position the drain and water supplies before tiling, set and level the bathtub, connect the supplied drain and trap, then test for leaks before sealing.

Can you use a freestanding bathtub in a small bathroom?

Below 8 m², a true freestanding bathtub is difficult to accommodate. A semi-freestanding or compact straight tub is usually a better fit.

    Acrylic or solid surface?

Acrylic is lighter, more accessible, and warm to the touch. Solid surface and engineered stone feel denser, retain heat well, and allow textured forms, but cost and weigh more.

How high is a freestanding bathtub?

ELYRA, KERA, LIORA, and LINEA are 60 cm high. VITRA is 78 cm high.

    Which faucet should I use?

Choose a freestanding floor-mounted faucet when the tub sits away from the wall, or a wall-mounted faucet when it sits close to a partition. Plan the water supplies before tiling.

    White or black freestanding bathtub?

White keeps the room light and timeless. Matte black creates a stronger contrast and works best in a bright bathroom. ELYRA, KERA, LIORA, and LINEA are available in Mineral White, Black, and four additional colors.

    What is a semi-freestanding bathtub?

It sits against a wall on one side and remains exposed on the other three, preserving the look of a freestanding bathtub while requiring less clearance.

How far should the bathtub be from the vanity?

Allow at least 40 cm, ideally 60 to 70 cm, so you can move comfortably between the tub and the vanity.

Are Aéraly freestanding bathtubs whirlpool tubs?

No. They are standard bathing tubs supplied with a drain and trap, without a whirlpool system.

    Is VITRA made of glass?

No. VITRA is made from translucent crystal resin, not glass.

    Is the faucet included?

No. Our freestanding bathtubs include the drain and trap. Faucets are selected separately according to the layout.
