Freestanding sinks: when the basin becomes a sculpture

A freestanding sink, also called a pedestal sink, totem sink, or column basin, is a self-supporting sink that does not sit on a vanity. The base and bowl form one volume that stands directly on the floor. Where a bathroom vanity creates a closed block, a freestanding sink opens up the space: more of the floor remains visible, the room feels larger, and the sink becomes a design object in its own right.

This is not simply a variation of a vessel sink. It follows a different layout logic. You do not gain storage, you gain visual space. In a small bathroom, a freestanding sink can make the room feel lighter. In a large one, it can become a focal point much like a freestanding bathtub. Four criteria matter when choosing one: available space, material, silhouette, and the faucet, which should be selected at the same time as the sink.

Height: 85 to 88 cm, already at a practical finished sink height.

    Footprint: around 40 x 40 cm to 48 x 48 cm for most models, 65 x 50 cm with a side shelf.

Water supply and drain: through the floor or wall, aligned with the sink.

Faucet: wall-mounted, or a tall faucet on a separate column.

    Our designer freestanding sinks

Our collection includes around fifteen designer freestanding sinks in stone, translucent resin on metal bases, and natural marble. All are floor-standing and do not require a vanity underneath.

The stone sinks explore geometry. AXIS is square and vertical, so it sits cleanly against a wall. RIVA and STRATA use cylindrical forms, with vertical fluting on RIVA and horizontal layering on STRATA. PRISMA is cut into geometric planes, ARCA uses circular openings, and ATLAS has the visual weight of a raw stone block. SILLAGE, in mineral-gray engineered stone, stretches into an asymmetric ribbed profile. ASTRA places a sculpted bowl on a slender stainless-steel base, creating the impression of a floating volume.

The translucent-bowl models combine clear resin bowls with tapered bases. ELARA uses a round bowl in Smoked Black or Amber, on gold, bronze, or wood-effect steel bases. ONDA uses a flared bowl available in Powder Pink or Lagoon Green on a gold base, on a pale stone base or white-veined marble-effect base, plus seven colors on walnut-effect bases, including opaque Terracotta, Sand Ivory, and Mist Blue bowls. AXIS CONSOLE adds a side shelf to AXIS, giving you a place for essentials without returning to the visual bulk of a vanity.

Which materials work best for a freestanding sink?

Material determines the look, weight, and maintenance. It is the factor that most clearly separates the models in our collection.

    MaterialAppearanceCare
Engineered stoneUniform mineral look, precise lines, fluted or ribbed reliefsDurable and easy to clean, with no special treatment required
Natural marbleUnique veining, substantial visual weightPorous material, requires compatible products, wiping after use, and suitable sealing
Transparent resinColored translucent bowl that catches the lightSoft cloth and non-abrasive cleaner to avoid scratching
CeramicThe classic white pedestal sink, smooth and more conventionalVery easy to maintain and resistant to limescale and household cleaners
Stainless-steel baseGold, bronze, or wood-effect finish with a slim silhouetteSoft cloth, no acidic products

    The honest point about marble

A marble sink is beautiful but demanding. Limescale, toothpaste, liquid soap, and especially acidic products can mark the surface if left to dry. Wipe it after use and renew the protective treatment regularly. Its weight also means the supporting floor should be checked before installation. For a family bathroom, a molded material is generally more forgiving day to day.

Round, oval, cylindrical, or rectangular freestanding sink

Shape affects both use and appearance.

    • Round freestanding sink: ELARA and ONDA, with round or flared bowls, soften bathrooms dominated by straight lines and allow light to pass through.
    • Cylindrical pedestal sink: RIVA and STRATA, one of the most common freestanding formats, easy to place centrally or against a wall.
    • Square or rectangular sink: AXIS is square and ATLAS rectangular, creating an architectural look that aligns naturally with tile and cabinetry.
    • Oval sink: less common in a freestanding version, but provides a longer washing area and can reduce splashing when washing the face.
    • Sculptural sink: ARCA, PRISMA, SILLAGE, or ASTRA when the sink is intended to set the tone for the entire bathroom.

The bowl design also matters in use. A shallow bowl splashes more easily when the faucet spout is badly positioned, while a wider and deeper bowl is more forgiving. Compare both before ordering, especially for a family bathroom.

Freestanding sink or bathroom vanity: advantages and limitations

    CriterionFreestanding sinkBathroom vanity
AppearanceSculptural object, visible floor, lighter visual effectMore traditional, closed volume
StorageNone, except AXIS CONSOLE with side shelfDrawers and doors below the sink
InstallationPlumbing should be planned before tilingStandard wall connections
MaintenanceNo underside to clean, no cabinet doors exposed to humidityCabinet fronts and interior require care

Functionally, a freestanding sink does one thing well: provides a water point without drawers or doors. Once installed, it can be simpler to live with than a vanity because there is nothing to remove to access the trap, nothing underneath to clean, and no cabinet door to swell in humidity. If you need storage, plan a tall cabinet or shelves elsewhere, or compare it with a vessel sink on a vanity.

Floor-standing vanity: the other meaning of the term

Some searches for “freestanding sink” actually refer to a floor-standing bathroom vanity: a cabinet on four legs with drawers or a shelf, supporting a vessel sink. It is a different solution, more practical for storage while still leaving some floor visible below the cabinet.

When choosing a floor-standing vanity, check three things: available width, from around 60 cm for a single sink to 120 cm for a double sink, final finished height once the sink is installed, usually around 85 to 90 cm, and the cabinet material, such as solid wood, oak, or moisture-resistant board. Our bathroom vanity collection includes both wall-mounted and floor-standing designs. The self-supporting freestanding sink remains the more sculptural choice when storage is available elsewhere.

Classic pedestal sink or designer freestanding sink

The traditional white ceramic pedestal sink remains common in renovations: a basin sits on a separate pedestal that conceals the trap. It is affordable and easy to maintain, but its look is more conventional, somewhere between retro styling and the classic bathroom. A designer freestanding sink works differently because the bowl and column form one continuous volume, often in a mineral material or solid surface, creating a cleaner and more contemporary silhouette.

Traditional ceramic handles limescale very well but is less suited to sculpted forms. Molded materials such as engineered stone or solid surface allow fluting, layering, and cut-outs that would be difficult to achieve in standard ceramic.

    Dimensions and layout

A freestanding sink usually occupies less floor area than a vanity, but it still needs clear circulation around it. Most of our models are 85 to 88 cm high and around 40 to 48 cm wide. AXIS CONSOLE is larger at 65 x 50 cm because of its side shelf.

Side clearance: allow at least 20 cm on each side when possible.

Clearance in front: around 70 cm for comfortable use.

Finished sink height: 85 to 88 cm, already integrated into the design.

Mirror center: around 135 cm from the floor, adjusted to user height.

In a small bathroom, a 40 x 40 cm totem can visually free more space than a 60 cm-wide vanity. In a larger bathroom, placing the sink away from the wall creates a more architectural composition, but the plumbing must be planned in the floor.

Which faucet should you pair with a freestanding sink?

The faucet is selected at the same time as the sink because its mounting method determines where the water supplies need to be placed.

Faucet typeWhen to choose itInstallation note
Wall-mounted faucetSink positioned close to a wallBody concealed in the wall, spout centered over the bowl
Tall deck-mounted faucetSink with enough room beside the bowlMounted on a separate surface or column
Ceiling-mounted faucetSink positioned centrally in the roomWater supply planned through the ceiling during construction

For a wall-mounted faucet, position the spout roughly 25 to 30 cm above the bowl and aim the water toward the center of the basin. For centrally placed sinks, a ceiling-mounted faucet can create a striking architectural effect but requires planning from the beginning of the project. Our bathroom faucet collection includes wall-mounted MÉRIDIEN two- and three-hole configurations as well as concealed models.

How to install a freestanding sink

The installation is decided almost entirely before the tile is laid. That is the main technical constraint, and the plumbing position is difficult to correct afterward.

    1. Position the sink and mark its exact centerline. Live with the taped outline for a few days if needed before confirming the location.
    2. Bring the water supplies and drain to that centerline during the floor build-up or before final leveling.
    3. Lay the tile, paying close attention to flatness around the service points.
    4. Set the sink in place and check that it is plumb on two perpendicular faces.
    5. Connect the drain and trap, which are separate on most of our models, then seal the base with sanitary silicone while leaving a small low point unsealed so any hidden leak can become visible.

    The most expensive mistake

A water connection that is off-center by ten centimeters. With a wall-mounted sink, some correction may be possible with fittings. With a freestanding sink, there is very little tolerance: either the sink moves and the layout looks wrong, or the finished floor has to be reopened. Mark it, measure twice, and have the plumber confirm the position before the floor is finished.

Drain and trap positioning follows the same basic logic as for a vessel sink. Our guide to sink height and drain positioning covers the key dimensions.

How to care for a freestanding sink

An engineered-stone sink can be cleaned with a soft sponge and a non-abrasive bathroom cleaner. Translucent bowls need the same gentle care, with no scouring powder or abrasive sponge that could scratch the surface. Natural marble requires compatible products, wiping after use, and periodic sealing. In every case, wipe around the base to prevent limescale marks on the floor.

    Freestanding sink prices

Our sculptural freestanding sinks range from €1,395 for AXIS or SILLAGE to €1,595 for ATLAS and AXIS CONSOLE with shelf. Translucent-bowl models on metal or light bases are €1,695 for ELARA and €1,795 for ONDA, while ASTRA on its steel base is €1,895. CAVA in natural Pietra Grey marble is €4,550. For comparable designs, material and machining complexity drive most of the price difference. Add the faucet, drain, and trap to the project budget.

Architects and interior designers equipping multiple bathrooms or hospitality projects can order through Aéraly Pro.

    Freestanding sink styles

A freestanding sink can work in a contemporary bathroom or in the renovation of a period apartment. The style comes from the material and geometry:

    • Contemporary and minimalist: AXIS, PRISMA, or SILLAGE, with crisp lines and natural mineral tones.
    • Architectural: ATLAS with its mass, or ARCA with its openings, for a sink that structures the room.
    • Light and elegant: ELARA and ONDA, whose translucent bowls interact with natural light.
    • Warm: wood-effect-base versions that echo furniture and pair naturally with oak.
    • Classic and timeless: CAVA in natural marble for a more characterful bathroom.

Where to buy a freestanding sink

Our freestanding sinks are sold online through Aéraly. Each product page lists dimensions, available finishes, and what is included so you can prepare the installation with your plumber before ordering. The collection can be browsed by material and finish to find a sink that coordinates with the rest of the bathroom. Architects, interior designers, and renovation professionals also have access to dedicated trade services.

For an outdoor sink, frost and UV resistance become essential. Our freestanding sinks are presented for bathroom use, so ask before ordering if you are considering an outdoor installation.

Decor ideas around a freestanding sink

    • Mineral bathroom: STRATA or RIVA with microcement walls and a matte black wall-mounted faucet.
    • Modern white bathroom: AXIS in white-veined stone, matte white tile, and a glass walk-in shower.
    • Warm bathroom: ELARA BOIS with an Amber bowl, pale wood, and brass fixtures.
    • Color-led bathroom: ONDA in Lagoon Green or Powder Pink on a gold base, against a single-color wall.
    • Open primary suite: a freestanding sink paired with a freestanding bathtub, two standalone elements that echo one another.

Every detail around a freestanding bathroom sink matters: a correctly sized mirror, a shower positioned away from splashes, a small shelf or table for essentials, and accessories coordinated with the sink base. A freestanding sink can also sit beside a wall-mounted bathroom vanity to keep the floor visually open while adding storage. Complete the setup with an LED bathroom mirror or two bathroom wall sconces for even frontal lighting.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is a freestanding sink?

A self-supporting sink, also called a totem sink or pedestal sink, installed directly on the floor without a vanity. The base and bowl form one volume, with water and drainage connections aligned beneath or behind it.

How do you install a freestanding sink?

Water supplies and drainage need to align precisely with the sink, which should be planned during the floor work. Mark the centerline, bring the services to that point, tile, set the sink level and plumb, then connect and seal it.

What are the dimensions of a freestanding sink?

Most of our models are 85 to 88 cm high and around 40 to 48 cm wide or in diameter. AXIS CONSOLE measures 65 x 50 cm because of its side shelf. Allow at least 20 cm of side clearance and around 70 cm in front.

    Which materials are available?

Ceramic for traditional pedestal sinks, engineered stone for easy maintenance and sculpted forms, transparent resin for colored translucent bowls, and natural marble for a unique but more demanding surface.

How much does a freestanding sink cost?

At Aéraly, our designer freestanding sinks range from €1,395 to €1,895, with CAVA in natural Pietra Grey marble at €4,550. Faucet, drain, and trap are additional.

Which faucet works with a freestanding sink?

A wall-mounted faucet around 25 to 30 cm above the bowl, or a tall separate faucet if the sink sits away from the wall. A ceiling-mounted faucet is also possible for a sink positioned centrally in the bathroom.

What is the difference between a freestanding sink and a vessel sink?

A vessel sink sits on a vanity or countertop. A freestanding sink is a self-supporting totem that replaces the vanity. It offers no built-in storage, but creates more visual space.

Does a freestanding sink work in a small bathroom?

Yes, if you are comfortable giving up storage underneath. A 40 x 40 cm totem can occupy less visual and physical space than a vanity. Add a tall cabinet or shelves elsewhere if you need storage.

What styles of freestanding sinks are available?

Contemporary and minimalist, architectural with solid or open forms, translucent and light-catching, warm with wood-effect bases, or classic in natural marble.

How do I choose a floor-standing bathroom vanity?

Measure the available width, typically 60 to 120 cm, check the finished sink height around 85 to 90 cm, and choose a material suited to humidity. If storage is not a priority, a self-supporting freestanding sink leaves more floor visible.

Where can I buy a freestanding sink?

On Aéraly, where each product page lists dimensions, finishes, and included components. Trade customers can order through the dedicated professional area.

Which mirror should I use above a freestanding sink?

A round or oval mirror close to the width of the sink, centered on its axis, with the center roughly 135 cm from the floor. An LED mirror also adds elegant frontal lighting.

Are the drain and trap included?

No, not on most of our sculptural sinks. They usually need to be purchased separately. Check the “included” section on each product page before ordering.
